A Harp with 32 Strings and 8 Chord Chords

The Crypto Chord

Plays Like a Zither, Sounds Like a Harp

An Accompaniment Harp

At first glance, the Crypto Cord might seem a bit unusual—and it is!

This unique instrument was commissioned by multi-instrumentalist Rory Hofman, who also gave it its name. If you haven’t heard Rory’s work, check him out on YouTube. He’s known for using rare and unconventional instruments, and the Crypto Cord was built to complement one of his own inventions.

Technically, it’s a type of zither, but it sounds more like a harp. Guitarists with basic chord knowledge can likely start playing right away. Accordion players will also find it familiar, with chords laid out in ascending fifths—like the bass side of an accordion.

Even if you’ve never played before, if you enjoy singing, the Crypto Cord—or any chord harp—makes it easy to accompany yourself with rich harmonies.

This model is the most versatile chord harp we’ve built yet, with access to more keys than any other chord harps.
